Senior Prep School Northwood

Leading the Way to Senior School Success

At St Martin’s, we recognise the crucial role that Years 7 and 8 play in a boy’s education. These pivotal years serve as the final steps in a preparatory journey, preparing boys for a seamless transition to senior school at 13+.

Why Choose Year 7 & 8 at St Martin’s?

Years 7 and 8 provide boys with an opportunity to:

  • Develop leadership skills through responsibilities such as prefect roles
  • Gain academic maturity in a supportive environment
  • Participate in co-curricular activities that broaden horizons
  • Build resilience and confidence before joining senior school

These final years of preparatory education allow boys to thrive without the pressures of early GCSE decisions, giving them the time and space to become well-rounded individuals.

“St Martin’s gives boys the best of both worlds - a nurturing preparatory environment with the added responsibility and leadership opportunities that prepare them for senior school.”

Leadership and Character Development

Our Year 7 and 8 boys are encouraged to take on leadership roles, whether as House Captains, Prefects, or Sports Captains, fostering confidence, responsibility, and empathy.

By the time they leave us at 13+, they are well-prepared to transition to top senior schools, equipped with the skills and character to succeed.

Preparing for Future Education

For some of the boys, this comes alongside preparation for examinations at 12+ and 13+ for the local academic day schools ISEB common entrance for schools such as Harrow and Eton, who require this. We have a superb track record of success at 13+ in gaining additional places and scholarships to these schools.

We also know that our boys can move to their next schools at 13 excellently prepared for what lies ahead. All of these aspects can be difficult to replicate in Years 7 and 8 of a large senior school where the year groups and class sizes are inevitably much larger and students don’t receive special attention.

Academia and Co-Curricular

In Years 7 and 8, boys at St Martin’s benefit from a balanced education that combines academic challenge with co-curricular enrichment. Our curriculum fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication, while specialist facilities support sports, arts, music, and drama.

These final prep school years allow boys to grow into confident, independent learners, preparing them for success at leading senior schools.

“My son is in Year 8 at St. Martin’s and he has really enjoyed the smaller class sizes, leadership roles and school trips etc in those final two years. Personally, I'm really pleased we didn't move him for Year 7.”
