Preferential Pathway - Year 5

St Martin's and Haberdashers' Boys' School have worked together to establish a Preferential Pathway for Year 5 families. It is an opportunity for boys whose families are committed to securing a place at Habs to receive an early decision, and with it, a greater sense of certainty during what can be an anxious time.

The pathway is built on the extensive knowledge St Martin's has accumulated of each boy over his time at the school. It is not an additional hurdle, nor a new source of pressure. Its purpose is to provide clarity and to allow boys to move forward with confidence.

How are decisions made?

There is no single test, no interview, and no specific moment of assessment. Decisions draw from the deep picture St Martin's builds of each boy over time, in many cases stretching back to his earliest years at the school.

  • Long-term academic progress

  • Learning behaviours and intellectual curiosity

  • Extracurricular involvement

  • Positions of responsibility

  • Achievements in music, sport and beyond

What are the possible outcomes?

By the end of the Spring Term, families will receive one of the following:
2A

Unconditional Offer

Your son's place at Habs is secure, to be taken up in Year 7 or Year 9. His place cannot be taken away.
2B

Conditional offer

A strong indication of suitability. His application progresses automatically to interview, but examination is still required.
3

No offer at this stage

Your son will sit the 11+ in the usual way. We anticipate this will be an uncommon outcome.

A note on preparation

Because decisions are drawn from a complete and long-term picture of your son, there is no meaningful way to prepare for the pathway specifically. Families are actively discouraged from arranging additional tutoring or targeted activities with the sole aim of influencing eligibility.

That approach would be contrary to the spirit of the pathway, and unnecessary.

Consent and next steps

Unless we hear otherwise, we will assume consent for your son's inclusion in the process. If you would prefer he is not considered, please let us know in writing.

If you have questions, we are happy to meet with you. We must be clear that no assurances regarding individual outcomes can be given.
