History of St Martin's

Lionel Warren Woodroffe founded St Martin’s School and was Headmaster for forty years. An accolade we have celebrated over this past Centenary Year. We are honoured to continue his legacy with the pioneering spirit that inspired him, providing our boys with a first-class education and experience to prepare them for life ahead.

The school first opened its doors on Tuesday 26th September 1922 in its original home “Overdene” on Sandy Lodge Way with just 2 boys. As the number of boys rapidly reached double figures, a proper school site, buildings and playing fields were needed. The end plot in Moor Park Road was selected and the building started late in 1923, with the move to the current site in the Summer Term of 1924.

There have been many changes since then including extensions to the site and the addition and modernisation of many buildings. Today St Martin’s has approximately 400 boys and 100 staff, providing a unique approach to education both challenging and nurturing in equal measure designed to help your child thrive in and out of the classroom.
