At St. Martin’s the boys are encouraged to experience a wide variety of sports, competing at a standard that is appropriate to their ability. By the time they leave the school at the end of Year 8, all boys will have had the opportunity to represent the school in an inter-school fixture.
The boys regularly compete in Athletics matches, Cross-Country events as well as swimming galas. Fixtures for the older boys have also taken place in hockey, basketball, badminton and table-tennis.
The school has a strong fixture list and takes part in number of tournaments. Boys have competed nationally and the school has won a considerable number of trophies in the last few years at football, cricket, athletics and cross-country.
The Physical Education programme is designed to provide boys with the skills and techniques necessary to enjoy the activities available. From Kindergarten through to Year 8 the teaching and coaching of the skills are a fundamental part of the lessons that the boys experience. In the Early Years the swimming pool is used on a weekly basis to promote confidence in the water. All boys are set the target to be able to swim by the time they move from the Pre-Prep to the Main School.
Once in Year 3 the motor skills that the boys have developed are put to good effect in games and PE lessons. The boys are introduced to the main sports of football, rugby and cricket, when they start playing inter-school matches in Year 4. The opportunity to play fixtures increases as a boy moves up the school. The Colts teams (Year 5 and 6) regularly have matches for A, B, C and D teams, while in Years 7 and 8 the school regularly puts out three or four teams.
