In the Pre-Prep at St Martin’s we aim to promote a love of learning, encouraging young inquisitive minds to foster the skills to develop to fulfill their potential, both socially and academically.

Children in Reception continue to follow the curriculum based on the Early Years Foundation Stage which includes Personal, social and emotional development, Physical development, Communication and language, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding of the world and Expressive arts and design.

Children in Year One and Two follow the Key Stage Curriculum of English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Art and Design Technology are taught by experienced practitioners with specialist teaching in Music, ICT, French, PE and Swimming. We also have a qualified part-time Learning Support teacher who is able to provide support and extend the curriculum for Gifted and talented boys.

Communication with parents is important to us. Parents and boys are greeted at the beginning of the day by Mrs J Lindsay, Head of Pre-Prep and the Message Book is an effective means of communicating with the Class Teacher. The Information Evening at the beginning of the academic year is an opportunity to gain an understanding of how we can work together to promote your son’s development both academically and socially. Parents’ Consultation Evenings take place twice a year and written reports in February and July provide opportunities to discuss your son’s progress.

Pastoral care underpins our teaching in the Pre-Prep. High standards of behaviour are expected with emphasis placed on manners, personal skills and an awareness of the feelings of others. Strategies to develop these skills are reinforced during Assemblies, Circle and Golden Time. Boys are rewarded with praise and a smile but also receive stickers, Gold Awards and Headteacher’s Certificate. Boys in Year Two are given responsibility by being appointed as a monitor.

Extra Curricular Activities for boys in Year One and Two include the Pre-Prep choir and football. Boys in Year Two may learn to play an instrument and lessons take place in the new, fully equipped Woodroffe Centre.

Pre and After School Care operate in the Pre-Prep Hall from 8.00am to 8.30am and 3.00pm to 6.00pm. Boys are able to do their homework and take part in a variety of activities. A charge is made by the hour and includes a snack and a drink.
