The English department aims to foster an enthusiasm for all aspects of literature and language. We enable boys to become young writers by specifically teaching a wide selection of styles for a range of different audiences, including: narrative, descriptive, persuasive, factual, journalistic, plays and poetry.

We use diverse stimuli and many of the skills are incorporated into a theme or linked to a class reader.

The boys examine a range of literature including novels, poetry and plays in a variety of genres. Considerable emphasis is also placed upon individual library reading.

Spelling and grammar is taught and reinforced. Constructive written and oral comments are used to enhance accuracy, as well as to provide further guidance.

We have had considerable success in preparing boys for a variety of schools, each with its own priorities and interests. Examination technique is taught and evaluative, analytical skills are developed.

Oral work is used in a variety of forms, from class participation, to our annual poetry recitation Spoken Word Competition.

The creativity of the department is indicated by the considerable achievements that boys of all abilities have gained in National and International competitions.
