The 2018 group of Year 8 boys may only number 28, but they have beaten all records by achieving the highest number of scholarships at St Martin’s. They have all been placed at their Senior School with 18 of them achieving an award. Twenty-Two academic scholarships have been gained as well as 5 music, 2 sports and 1 design technology scholarship. Our Year 8 boys have much to be proud of, as they responded with determination to the guidance and support from the staff.
Competition for places at selective senior schools is always challenging, therefore to have 20 boys placed at Merchant Taylors’ is very pleasing. Every year there are 20 academic awards available and St Martin’s boys were once again offered 8 of them. In addition there was also 1 sports and 1 music scholarship.
Eight boys were offered places at Haberdashers’ Aske’s, five of those with academic scholarships.
There was a 100% pass rate at Berkhamsted, John Lyon and Aldenham and five places were offered at St Albans. Seven academic awards were gained at John Lyon, as well as 2 sports scholarships and 1 music award, whilst there were two academic scholarship and a music award at Berkhamsted and a design technology scholarship at Aldenham.
Over the last 5 years, St Martin’s has gained 83 academic scholarships, 16 sports, 6 music, 3 drama, 2 art and 2 design technology awards.
David Tidmarsh, Headmaster, said ‘To maintain the highest standards each year is always a challenge and so I am delighted for the boys, staff and parents. The Year 8 boys have been a credit to the school and they should be very proud of their superb achievements. We are fortunate to have a dedicated team of teachers who have high expectations and also offer superb pastoral support to the boys. I know our pupils have the ‘best start in life’ and have promising futures ahead of them.’
